Top ranking on search engines

Normaly we use meta tag on the web pages to have our website in top 10 - 20 positions  on search engines (like yahoo,google etc). Can we optimize our web pages, developed in Activegrid, for top ranking in search engines? If yes then how can we get it? If anybody have idea please provide some information regarding that.

One Idea is to create a layout called something like "metawords" with nothing in it except for the meta tags and associated keywords. is that what you are looking for, or more?
